## Why does your knee keep aching?

Phoenix heat moves errands and walks into the cooler morning. A stiff knee can make even that short outing feel long.

Years of use, an old injury, or weak thigh muscles often cause the ache. You may notice stiffness during those first steps from a chair.

## What usually causes the soreness?

Arthritis often develops after a knee has worked for many years. The joint then doesn't bend and glide as easily.

An old fall or twist may leave lasting tender spots. Extra weight adds strain when weak muscles can't share the load.

Soreness behind the kneecap may show up on stairs or slopes. Swelling and stiffness can follow a busy day on your feet.

## What can you try at home?

A sore knee still needs gentle movement within your comfort. Try brief walks spread through the day instead of one long outing.

A cane may steady you when the knee feels weak. Supportive shoes can also soften each step on hard ground.

An ice pack can settle swelling once you've been active. Heat can loosen stiffness, but it won't mend a sudden injury.

Ask your doctor about pain-relief gel for the knee or oral medicine. Those drugs may not suit every health history.

## When is it time to have the knee checked?

A regular visit makes sense when soreness spoils sleep or cuts walks short. It's also useful when care at home hasn't helped enough.

You'll talk about the first sore day and movements that hurt. The medical provider examining you will bend the knee and check its strength.

QC Kinetix offers regenerative treatments, meaning knee shots prepared there from your blood or bone marrow, the soft tissue inside bones. Whether one fits depends on the exam and your health.

Fever plus a red, burning knee calls for care now. After a hard injury, quick care matters when you can't stand.

## What does Phoenix put your knee through?

Phoenix heat moves outdoor activity into the hours before sunrise. Short, steady walks may feel easier on your sore knee.

Camelback has steep downhill stretches, while Pecos Park offers plenty of court time. Increase either activity slowly so the knee can adjust.

The Banner Estrella clinic at 9305 W. Thomas Rd. serves west and central Phoenix. I-10 and the 91st Avenue exit are the usual route from downtown.

Scottsdale on E. Mountain View Road may be nearer from Arcadia or the Biltmore. Chandler may be easier from Ahwatukee, south of South Mountain.

The 2019 ACR/Arthritis Foundation guideline makes STRONG recommendations for exercise, weight loss in people with overweight or obesity, self-efficacy and self-management programs, tai chi, cane use, tibiofemoral bracing, topical NSAIDs, oral NSAIDs and intra-articular glucocorticoid injections in knee OA; radiofrequency ablation for knee OA is only a conditional recommendation.

2. In a 2-year, double-blind RCT of 140 patients with symptomatic knee OA and ultrasound synovitis, intra-articular triamcinolone 40 mg every 12 weeks caused significantly GREATER cartilage volume loss than saline (index-compartment cartilage thickness change -0.21 mm vs -0.10 mm; between-group difference -0.11 mm, 95% CI -0.20 to -0.03) with NO significant difference in pain (-1.2 vs -1.9 on the WOMAC Likert pain subscale).

3. The RESTORE trial randomized 288 adults aged 50+ with symptomatic mild-to-moderate medial knee OA to three weekly leukocyte-poor PRP injections or saline placebo. At 12 months, pain change was -2.1 vs -1.8 points (difference -0.4; 95% CI -0.9 to 0.2; P=.17) and medial tibial cartilage volume change was -1.4% vs -1.2% (P=.81). 29 of 31 prespecified secondary outcomes showed no significant between-group difference. The authors concluded the findings 'do not support use of PRP for the management of knee OA.'

## Where can you discuss these choices?

The first QC Kinetix visit costs nothing and covers regenerative treatments, which are knee shots prepared from your blood or bone marrow, the soft tissue inside bones. A medical provider examines your knee, explains how the clinic prepares the material, and says whether a shot may fit.

The Phoenix location is at 9305 W. Thomas Rd., Suite 460, Phoenix, AZ 85037. One number reaches the clinics: (602) 837-PAIN.
